Sometimes a painting is born not from a complex subject but from light. One sunbeam is enough to make skin glow.

Materials

Paints

For paints we will need my classic set of paints.

I work with the French paint PEBEO. You can take paint from other makers, but the shades may differ.

Below is the list of paints and their PEBEO numbers

  • titanium white25
  • lemon01
  • cadmium yellow02
  • cadmium red 05/06/07 ( any of them or all)
  • light ochre20
  • raw sienna21
  • pink37
  • madder50
  • turquoise38
  • cobalt12
  • ultramarine14
  • steel blue47
  • black24

The only color from the Ladoga/Master Class range is Raw Leningrad Umber.

Canvas

The sizes I will be painting on: 50x60, 60x70

On the lessons I paint on linen canvases. The size is entirely up to you. It is worth going by the ratio of the sides.

If the reference is elongated, the difference between the sides should be 20 cm or more (for example 40x60 / 50x70).

Classic rectangular formats have a difference of 10 cm (40x50 / 50x60)

Squares and circles you also choose according to the reference.

I have nothing against you departing from the given canvas proportions, for instance, if the reference is elongated and you have decided to take a square canvas.

That is always an interesting creative task.

Thinner

I paint with pure odorless pinene. If you are used to painting with oil or triple medium, that is up to you, but I recommend taking a look at my way of building a painting.

Brushes

I use synthetic filberts. From the smallest to medium. A flat wash brush is optional. I will not be focusing on them. A bristle brush will not be the main brush either.

Other tools may turn up while the course is being made; I will mention them in the lesson, but they will not be essential.

Palette knife

I always recommend having 2-4 palette knives of different shapes.

Artist, teacher

Mikhail Mishinsky
  • Founder of the online creative school "ARTCLASS"
  • Co-founder of the painting school "Izo Project PARTA"

Back in 1996 my parents took me to a children's art school. That was how it was done - children were sent to learn to draw. But unlike my classmates at the "art school", even then I had made up my mind that painting would be my profession.

After school I went to a college of culture, where I qualified as a "Master Artist". It is the place where they taught me not only to paint, but to cross-stitch, to knot macramé, to model and to carve... In short, everything you can possibly imagine in the crafts was passed on to me there by experienced teachers.
